Barkant Turnips Brassicas Seed from Barenbrug Seeds has high sugar content which provides winter-hardiness and increased palatability. While not always thought of as a cover crop, Barkant turnips often double as a forage and cover crop, usually being mixed with small grains like oats and triticale. Planted in the early fall, Barkant turnips provide a massive amount of dry matter that helps suppress weeds, control erosion, and can be stock piled for winter forage.
Barkant requires good soil drainage and a pH between 5.3 and 7.5. Seed should be planted in a firm, moist, seedbed. Barkant can be broadcasted or drilled with 6 to 8 inch rows at 2-3 pounds per acre
